Intune or SCCM: comparing device management

Both tools manage Windows devices but with different philosophies. The comparison shows when cloud, when classic and when both together make sense.

Two approaches

Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM) is an on-premises solution with servers in your own network. It is strong in software distribution, operating system deployment and reporting. Microsoft Intune is a cloud service that manages devices over the internet, also outside the company network, and supports modern methods such as Autopilot.

Side by side

  • Operation: SCCM needs its own servers and maintenance; Intune is operated by Microsoft.
  • Device location: SCCM suits devices in the company network; Intune manages devices anywhere.
  • Provisioning: SCCM uses images and task sequences; Intune uses Autopilot.
  • Updates: SCCM distributes via WSUS mechanisms; Intune controls Windows Update for Business.
  • Mobile devices: Intune also manages iOS, Android and macOS.
  • Special cases: SCCM remains strong for complex software distribution and legacy systems.

Co-management as a transition

With co-management both systems manage the same devices, and individual workloads such as updates, compliance or applications are moved to Intune step by step. This allows the change without a hard cut.

Decision aid

If your devices are mostly mobile and Microsoft 365 is in use, much speaks for Intune. With many legacy applications and server-based processes, SCCM or a hybrid can make sense. A short inventory shows which path fits your environment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Intune and SCCM?

SCCM is on-premises management for devices in the company network; Intune is a cloud service that manages devices everywhere and uses modern methods such as Autopilot.

What is co-management?

Both systems manage the same devices, and individual workloads move step by step from SCCM to Intune.

Is SCCM outdated?

SCCM remains supported and in use, but Microsoft directs development strongly towards Intune. For new projects, cloud management is worth considering.
