FIRST STEPS
What you can do immediately in an incident
- Stay calm. Do not delete, format or reinstall anything in haste, so that traces are preserved.
- Disconnect affected devices from the network. Unplug network cables and switch off Wi-Fi so that an attack does not spread further.
- Protect backups. Disconnect backup media and backup targets from the network so they are not encrypted as well.
- Change passwords. Secure affected accounts, but from a clean device.
- Document. Record time, messages, screenshots and affected systems.
- Inform those responsible. If personal data has been breached, a report to the data protection authority within 72 hours may be necessary. Have this checked legally in the individual case.
- Consider filing a report. For a criminal offence such as extortion, a report to the police can make sense.
