What is Microsoft Entra ID?
Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) is Microsoft's cloud identity service. It authenticates users for Microsoft 365 and thousands of other applications through OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect and SAML. Functions include multi-factor authentication, conditional access and device binding.
Typical tasks
- Setting up single sign-on for cloud applications.
- MFA and access rules through conditional access.
- Synchronisation with an on-premises Active Directory via Entra Connect or Cloud Sync.
- Managing guests and external partners.
- Roles and time-limited permissions for administrators.
Benefits and limits
Entra ID makes sign-in and access control for cloud applications central and secure. Some functions depend on the licence tier. Entra ID is not "Active Directory in the cloud": group policy and Kerberos scenarios continue to run in on-premises AD or are replaced through Intune.
How INZOSO helps with Entra ID
We plan the identity architecture, set up Entra ID with MFA and conditional access, connect applications for single sign-on and support the path from on-premises via hybrid to cloud.
