IN DETAIL

What is Windows Autopilot?

Windows Autopilot is a Microsoft process for provisioning new Windows devices without your own image. The device starts at the user with Windows setup, connects to the cloud, receives policies and applications through Intune and is ready for use after sign-in.

Typical use cases

  • Delivering new laptops directly to employees, also to home offices.
  • Device replacement without manual reinstallation.
  • Uniform, reproducible configuration of all devices.
  • Rollouts in waves with a pilot group.

Benefits and limits

No own image, less manual work and consistent configuration speak for Autopilot. Prerequisites are Entra ID, Intune, suitable licences and an internet connection at first start. Besides the classic profile there is Autopilot device preparation, a newer variant with simplified setup. Check the current Microsoft documentation.
