IN DETAIL

What is Active Directory?

Active Directory (AD) is Microsoft's directory service for Windows networks. Domain controllers store users, computers and groups and provide sign-in through Kerberos, NTLM and LDAP. Group policy controls settings centrally and certificate services can be added.

Typical tasks

  • Building and migrating domains and domain controllers.
  • Cleaning up legacy items: old accounts, groups, policies.
  • Protection against typical attacks such as Kerberoasting.
  • Active Directory audit with a prioritised action list.
  • Hybrid connection to Entra ID and Microsoft 365.

Benefits and limits

AD is proven, well understood and tightly integrated with Windows. It is also a preferred attack target: too many rights, legacy protocols and unmanaged service accounts are common weaknesses. For purely cloud-based environments Entra ID can be enough.

How INZOSO helps with Active Directory

We review your directory, assess configuration and rights, harden it, clean up and support migration or hybrid connection. More in our Active Directory guides.

Frequently asked questions

What does a domain controller do?

It stores the directory, authenticates users and devices and distributes group policy. At least two should be operated for redundancy.

How often should Active Directory be reviewed?

At least annually and after major changes such as migration, acquisition or cloud connection.

Do I still need Active Directory if I use Microsoft 365?

Not necessarily. It remains useful for classic applications, file servers and group policy.
