Why UniFi?
UniFi combines gateway, switches, Wi-Fi access points and optionally cameras in one management interface. This reduces maintenance effort and gives an overview of the entire network. For small and mid-sized companies it offers a good ratio of features to effort.
Planning points
- Coverage and capacity: number and placement of access points based on floor plan, wall material and user numbers, supplemented by an on-site survey.
- Cabling: structured cabling to the access points, power via PoE.
- Segmentation: separate VLANs for office, guests, devices, phones and administration.
- Firewall rules: which segments may talk to each other?
- Guest Wi-Fi: isolated, with time and bandwidth limits.
- Credentials: WPA3 or WPA2-Enterprise instead of one shared password where possible.
- Updates and configuration backup: plannable maintenance windows.
- Remote access: VPN functions for site coupling or mobile staff.
Typical mistakes
Too few or badly placed access points, everything in one network without separation, default passwords, firmware never updated and undocumented configuration. Avoiding these points already gives you a solid network.
Connecting sites
With several sites, site-to-site connections, central management and, with UISP, also wireless links or broadband access can be integrated. We plan and set this up together with you.
